From alpine lakes to epic sunsets, Glacier National Park offers awe-inspiring elopement backdrops, inclusive vendors, and heartfelt ways to make your wedding day reflect exactly who you are—regardless of gender, identity, or who you love. Add a stop in Missoula—a wildly queer-friendly mountain town—and your experience becomes even more meaningful.
Whether you’re exchanging vows on a remote mountainside or celebrating with chosen family under the pines, this guide is here to help LGBTQ+ couples feel affirmed, celebrated, and supported every step of the way.
Glacier’s towering peaks, pristine lakes, and intimacy make it an ideal elopement destination. But its draw goes deeper: Glacier’s raw beauty draws couples from around the world—but it holds something special for queer folks: space to breathe, to belong, and to love openly.
There’s something powerful about choosing wild spaces for your love story. Maybe it’s the symbolism—resilience, beauty, freedom—or maybe it’s just the way nature reflects back the most honest version of who we are. If you’ve ever felt like you had to shrink your story to fit into someone else’s mold, this is your permission to do the opposite..

Montana is big, wild, and yes—rural. And while rural often comes with a side of old-school worldviews, you’ll also find deep warmth, fierce allies, and an entire landscape that says: you are welcome here. You deserve to take up space. You deserve joy, tenderness, and a ceremony that feels 100% like you.
This land isn’t just for a certain kind of couple. It’s for anyone who finds beauty in the mountains, peace in the trees, and meaning in the quiet moments that weddings are made of.
Whether you’re envisioning an ultra-private elopement deep in the wilderness or a joyful ceremony on the Lake Mcdonald shoreline where you can declare your love in front of family and friends, we’ll find the perfect ceremony location together—one that honors your love and gives you space to breathe it all in.
We also honor that this park sits on the homelands of the Blackfeet, Salish, Kootenai, and Pend d’Oreille peoples—whose stories, ceremonies, and connections to this land continue today.
If you’re here, reading this, you’ve probably already pushed back against a world that tried to tell you how to live and love. So let’s not bring any of that noise into your ceremony. You don’t have to follow a script or fit into boxes that were never made for you.
You’ve fought—whether loudly or silently—for the right to stand beside your partner and say “yes” to a life together. You deserve to do that in a way that feels real and right. Not performative. Not filtered. Just true to you.
That might look like sharing vows under a milky way mountain sky wrapped in each other’s warmth. Or maybe wearing matching boots and bolo ties. Or ditching tradition altogether and creating something that’s uniquely yours. You get to write the rules.
Want to wear the same outfit? Do it. Want to walk down the trail together? Hell yes. Want your dog as your ring bearer? Same.
This is your moment. Your story. Your space. Let’s make it reflect you—as you really are.

No, thanks to the 2015 Supreme Court decision to legalize same-sex marriage, there are no extra hoops you need to jump through to obtain your marriage license.
Getting your Montana marriage license as an LGBTQIA couple is fortunately no different than for other couples, since same-sex marriage was federally recognized in 2015 (how has this already been TEN YEARS!?!). Here are the steps to obtain your Montana marriage license:
OK but what if I want to fly in on Friday night and get married on Sunday? I can’t pick up my license during business hours…
We have a solution for that too! Montana is full of loopholes. If your travel plans are that restrictive, you can opt to do a Declaration of Marriage. Still file the application online. Say you’re going to wed on Sunday; then on Monday, you go to the Clerk of Courts and state, under oath, that the two of you wed on Sunday. You pay your $53 and then are married by the clerk. No legal witness needed. The downside is that this pathway usually gives you a plain 8.5×11 Declaration Certificate, instead of the decorative legal-size gold certificate.
Fun fact, if you walk into a Montana courthouse without an appointment to see a judge, this is what they do for you. Raise your right hand and declare you are now married. Boom baby!
Here are a few incredible, easy-to-access ceremony spots that are perfect for LGBTQ+ couples looking for beauty, intimacy, and wow-worthy views:
Note: All ceremonies in Glacier require a special use permit, even for elopements. I’ll walk you through the process, no stress. For more information on permits, visit Glacier’s NPS wedding website.

Your wedding doesn’t end at “I do.” Here are some dreamy, low-key ways to spend the rest of your elopement day together:
If you’re bringing guests, consider booking a cabin nearby for a backyard dinner party or bonfire reception.

If you’re passing through Missoula, don’t skip it. This funky, artsy mountain town is known as one of America’s most queer-friendly towns—and it makes for the perfect pre- or post-elopement getaway. I’ve lived in over a dozen places in my life and when I say Missoula is a home for everyone, I truly believe that.
Fun Fact: The State Representative for the Missoula District of the Montana House of Representatives is Zooey Zephyr, a proud trans woman and integral community member. Her wife, journalist Erin Reed, also a trans woman, advocates for trans rights across the USA. They eloped at the Missoula Butterfly Garden last year.
You are safe in our town.
Whether it’s date night cocktails or impromptu dance party, Missoula is your space to exhale, celebrate, and prep your hearts for Glacier.
