If your idea of a perfect wedding involves mountain ridgelines, stars overhead, and the quiet awe of sunrise spilling across the tallest peak in the Bitterroot Mountain Range… this one’s for you.
Trapper Peak rises to 10,157 feet and is one of the most iconic summits in Western Montana. It’s rugged, remote, and totally breathtaking — a place where saying your vows feels like whispering a secret into the sky.
This guide walks you through everything you need to know to elope on Trapper Peak at sunrise — from start times to hiking logistics to how to stay warm in alpine chill.
Trapper Peak Trail lies in the Bitterroot National Forest, just minutes from Darby, MT and two hours south of Missoula, MT. It’s an 8-mile out-and-back trail that’s generally considered challenging, as it’s 3,700 feet of elevation gain in just 4 miles. This is definitely one of those “do your makeup after the hike” kinds of elopements—raw, real, and unforgettable. Yes, this trail is intense. It’s not for the faint of heart, especially for those hoping to make the climb in the pre-sunrise hours of the dawn. But the reward for your efforts is unmatched: a breathtaking panorama of Montana mountains and dramatic cliff structures rivaling the Dolomites and Yosemite (just a wee bit smaller).
But for those billy goats hoping to share a completely secluded “I Do” with only eagles and clouds, there’s no better place in my honest opinion.
From late spring through early fall, Trapper Peak offers some of the best stargazing in the region. On new moon nights, you’ll hike under a canopy of stars—sometimes even catching the Milky Way arcing across the sky. It’s a magical way to start your marriage: headlamps, stars, and silence.

Vows at first light are otherworldly — the light pours in from the east and sets the peaks aglow. Your day will be perfectly tailored to who you are, but here are some delightful ideas to help your envision the majesty of this place:
In the wild west of the Bitterroot National Forest, it is crucial to use these public lands sustainably. That way when you come back in 10 years for your anniversary, the mountains will be just as you remembered them, with lush forests and abundant wildlife doing their thing in their ancient home. Here are some things to remember:

Trapper Peak is a seasonal adventure—and timing matters. Because of snowpack and road conditions, your best bet for a safe, dry summit experience is late July through early October. That said, conditions vary every year depending on snowfall, spring melt, and fall storms.

Pro tip: Even in July, bring microspikes and layers just in case—it’s not uncommon to hit small patches of snow in shaded areas or near the top.
For a sunrise or sunset elopement, you’ll want to stay as close as possible to the trailhead to maximize sleep and driving efficiency. If camping’s your jam, there are lots of great local options. Otherwise, ranches, lodges, and Airbnbs in Conner, MT are probably your best bet. Darby, the nearest town with typical hotel lodging, is 30-45 minutes away.
Once you’ve soaked in the magic (and made your way back down), there’s nothing like a hot meal to wrap up the morning. Here are some of my Bitterroot favorites:
You know my list would not be complete without at least one farmers market recommendation. This is my favorite market in Montana, and that’s saying something! This market has everything, from small town charm to exquisite baked goods, flowers, and locally grown produce. If your Trapper Peak elopement nests with the weekend, you must visit the market!
Pro Tip: You can pick up locally grown flowers for a bouquet at the market from FarmWild, a local 12 acre flower farm in Hamilton.
Because this elopement starts long before dawn and unfolds at 10,000 feet, I offer it as a custom package. That doesn’t mean more expensive, just different than a typical 8hr timeline. We’ll shape the timeline around what matters most to you: whether that’s private vows on the peak, portraits on the trail, or cozy morning moments back at your cabin.
If you’re eloping on Trapper Peak, I’ll meet you at the trailhead with everything packed and ready. I’ll hike in with you and give you space when it’s time to say your vows — I’ll be just far enough for privacy, but close enough for safety and direction.
Let’s build something totally your own.
You don’t need a big venue to make your vows feel epic. Just stars, mountains, and a little bit of courage.
Let’s make your elopement feel as wild and real as your love. If Trapper Peak is calling you, reach out and let’s talk details. I’ll help you plan every step — from the hike to the hot cocoa at sunrise.
