If you’re dreaming of eloping in Glacier, you’re probably picturing sapphire lakes, alpine valleys, and the two of you wrapped in mountain mist at sunrise—not wading through paperwork. But if you want to make it legally official inside the park, there are a few key things you need to know.
Here’s the good news: Yes, you can legally get married in Glacier National Park. The not-so-glamorous part? You’ll need a permit—and you’re limited to designated locations. But don’t stress—this guide covers everything from choosing your ceremony spot to getting your Montana marriage license, and how I help make it all seamless.
Yes. All legal weddings inside Glacier National Park require a Special Use Permit—even if it’s just the two of you (and your photographer!)
If you’re working with me as your photographer, I help you every step of the way from securing your dream ceremony spot to understanding what’s allowed at each location, and how to navigate any changes to your permit once issued.
Glacier only allows legal wedding ceremonies at 31 pre-approved locations—with limited exceptions—but we can travel to other locations for portraits and hiking locations afterward!
You can find detailed information on each ceremony location in this post, The Best Places to Get Married in Glacier National Park.
Some of my favorite legal ceremony spots include:
Each location comes with its own rules about group size, vehicle limits, noise, and more—but don’t worry, I’ll help you choose one that fits your vision and your guest count.
To make your Glacier elopement legally binding, you’ll need a Montana marriage license, which is easy to get even at the last minute….but don’t worry, we’ll streamline this so you don’t have any hiccups! You must pick up your license in person yourself during standard business hours; that’s one thing I cannot do for you. I can, however, deliver the signed license to the courthouse on your behalf to be filed.
But what if I’m flying in late Friday and getting married on Sunday? How will we pick up our license and get married?
Don’t worry, Montana has you covered! In the state of Montana, you can self-solemnize, meaning you can go to the courthouse the following Monday and state, without witnesses, that you two were married on Sunday. You’ll still need to file the application and pay the $53 fee, and you raise your right hand before the ckerk of courts and state, under oath, that the wedding happened. And that’s it! Unfortunately this avenue does not guarantee you the legal-ledger-sized, gold-stamped marriage license, but you’ll receive a “Declaration of Marriage” on standard 8.5×11 paper instead. For couples traveling on very tight timelines, this is an excellent option.
This one trips people up all the time, so I’d like to take a minute to let’s set the record straight:
🚫 You cannot legally get married on a hiking trail, scenic overlook, or backcountry route in Glacier. This is to protect the wild spaces from overuse, as hundreds of people get married in the park each year.
✅ Legal ceremonies are only allowed at the 31 designated sites with a permit. Exceptions to this are reviewed on a case-by-case basic by the permit office.
But don’t worry—that doesn’t mean you can’t have an adventurous experience. Many couples say their vows at one of the approved spots, then hike afterward for portraits, a picnic, or even a swim. It’s the best of both worlds: legally legit + wildly romantic.
If your dream is to hike in with your vows, ditch the red tape, or plan a last-minute elopement, you might consider locations outside of Glacier’s boundaries.
Some favorite permit-free elopement options nearby:
I can help you explore these options if you want more freedom with timing, guest count, or location.
Eloping in a national park comes with a lot of logistics—and that’s where I shine. As an Army veteran turned environmental journalist turned adventure elopement photographer, planning and problem-solving is kind of my thing.
Here’s what I bring to the table:
You don’t have to stress about red tape or confusing forms—I’ll help you every step of the way so you can focus on what matters: saying yes to forever in a place that feels like magic.
