If you’re dreaming of an elopement or adventurous honeymoon that feels wild, soulful, and totally off the beaten path — Wild Horse Island State Park might just be your magic place.
Tucked into the turquoise waters of Flathead Lake, Montana’s largest natural freshwater lake, this island is a protected haven where wild horses roam free, bald eagles soar overhead, and time seems to slow down.
This isn’t a venue — it’s a vibe. A wildly romantic one.
The wild horses on Wild Horse Island are thought to be descendants of horses that belonged to the Kootenai people. Historically, the Kootenai used the island as a natural sanctuary to hide and protect their horses from rival tribes or settlers—since Flathead Lake served as a natural barrier.
While the original horses may have left or died out over time, the Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks Department has reintroduced small numbers of horses to the island to maintain the historic and cultural legacy. These aren’t technically feral mustangs, but semi-managed horses that live wild on the island with little human intervention.
The herd size is usually kept between 5 and 10 horses.
The exact number varies year to year depending on breeding, age, and management decisions. Because Wild Horse Island is a state park and wildlife sanctuary, the number is intentionally kept small to prevent overgrazing and ensure the island’s ecological balance. Please do not approach them—they’re wild. And they deserve space.
Pro tip: You’ll often spot them in the meadows or tree lines near the center of the island—but keep your distance and use a zoom lens for respectful viewing.
Yes — but with intention.
This is a Montana State Park, and while it’s not set up like a traditional wedding venue, it’s an amazing option for tiny, leave-no-trace ceremonies or just gorgeous portraits and a private vow exchange.
Here’s what to know:
Maximum guest count: This is best for just the two of you or an ultra-intimate group of 4–6 people.
Permits: A special use permit may be required for professional photography or small ceremonies. Always check with Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks (Region 1) in advance to confirm.
The island is only accessible by boat, kayak, or private charter—and that’s part of what makes it so magical.
⚠️ Important Safety Note: Please don’t try to kayak from Wild Horse Island to other destinations like Painted Rocks. Flathead Lake’s weather can shift fast, and even strong paddlers can get caught in wind or waves.
Instead, kayak back to Big Arm and drive to your next stop. It’s only about a 20-minute drive and far safer.
⛴ Boat Rental & Charter Options:
- Paddleboard Outfitters
- Wild Horse Island Boat Trips (from Dayton)
- Flathead Lake Charters
- Bigfork Outdoor Rentals
- Or hire a private guide if you want help navigating and more flexibility for photo timing
Pro tip: Plan for at least 3–5 hours total, including round-trip travel and time to hike and explore.
You’ll be out in the elements with no services, so preparation is key. Whether you’re eloping or just exploring, don’t forget:
✅ Sturdy hiking shoes or boots
✅ Plenty of water (no potable water on the island)
✅ Bear spray
✅ Snacks or a full picnic
✅ Sun protection (hat, SPF, sunglasses)
✅ Trash bags to pack out everything
✅ Vow books, rings, and a lightweight blanket
✅ Swimsuit + towel if you plan to take the plunge
✅ Camera gear or disposable cameras for fun
✅ Bluetooth speaker (low volume only!)
📷 If I’m your photographer, I’ll carry some extra essentials and guide you through the best trails and light.
This is Wild Horse Island — not petting zoo island. It’s protected land, and our job is to visit with deep respect and minimal impact.
🚫 Approach or feed the horses or wildlife — this can be dangerous for both you and them
🚫 Walk through sensitive vegetation or meadows
🚫 Pick wildflowers or plants
🚫 Play loud music or disturb the silence of other visitors and the animals
🚫 Leave any trace behind — including petals, food scraps, biodegradable items, or human waste. Pack it out!
💬 A reminder: This island holds cultural and spiritual significance for the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes (CSKT). Let your time here be quiet, reverent, and intentional.
Once you’re back on the mainland, head to Painted Rocks—a beloved local swimming spot just 20 minutes from Big Arm by car. This rocky cliffside features jumping spots ranging from 10 to 80 feet, so there’s a plunge for every comfort level.
Want to really celebrate your elopement? Jump in wearing your wedding gear! It’s a total thrill, the photos are incredible, and it’s a story you’ll never stop telling. We can follow up with some stunning in-water and underwater portraits.
🚫 Again—please don’t attempt to kayak from Wild Horse Island to Painted Rocks. Even experienced paddlers can be caught off-guard on Flathead Lake. Drive the scenic route and enjoy a safer (and warmer) journey.
Whether you’re eloping or just exploring, here’s how to make the most of it:
